The Cold War (1947-1991)

Origins: Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan (1947-1948) vs. Jdanov Doctrine. The world splits into two blocs.

Major crises:

• Berlin Blockade (1948-1949)
• Korean War (1950-1953)
• Berlin Wall (1961)
• Cuban Missile Crisis (October 1962) — peak nuclear risk
• Vietnam War (1964-1975)

End of the Cold War: Gorbachev's glasnost and perestroika, fall of the Berlin Wall (November 9, 1989), dissolution of the USSR (December 25, 1991).

Decolonization and the Third World

• India (1947): independence and partition, led by Gandhi and Nehru
• Indochina (1946-1954): French defeat at Dien Bien Phu
• Algeria (1954-1962): war of independence, Evian Accords
• Bandung Conference (1955): 29 Afro-Asian nations affirm non-alignment

European Construction

Key milestones: ECSC (1951), Treaty of Rome (1957), Maastricht Treaty (1992, EU creation), euro introduction (2002), Brexit referendum (2016).

The French Fifth Republic (since 1958)

Established by de Gaulle with a strong presidency. Key moments: direct presidential election (1962), Mitterrand era (1981-1995, abolition of death penalty), cohabitation periods, shift to 5-year term (2000).
