Study with a mind map: the method (and when it’s useless)
The mind map — or mind map — shows up in almost every revision tip. You’re shown pretty, colorful diagrams with branches spreading out in every direction, you’re told that “it stimulates both hemispheres of the brain,” and you walk away feeling like you’re revising badly because your notes are linear.
Let’s set the record straight. A mind map is a genuinely powerful tool, but for a very specific reason, and in specific situations. Used the wrong way, it wastes your time decorating a page instead of helping you learn. Here’s how to use it wisely.
What a mind map really does for you
A mind map is a diagram that starts from a central idea (the topic) and branches out into thinner and thinner branches: the main themes, then the sub-themes, then the details. There’s nothing magical about it. Its value comes down to one thing: it makes the links between ideas visible.
When you take notes in the usual way, information is presented as a list, from top to bottom. That’s perfect for a procedure or a timeline, but it hides something essential: how ideas connect to each other. Yet understanding a lesson is not about stacking facts on top of each other; it’s about grasping their structure. A mind map forces you to answer the question “what depends on what?” — and that effort is exactly what helps the lesson stick in your mind.
So the real benefit is not the final drawing. It’s the act of building it. A mind map you simply copy from a textbook teaches you nothing. How to build a useful one, step by step
- Start in the center. Write the topic in the middle of a landscape-oriented sheet (you need room on the sides). One word, two at most.
- Draw the main branches. These are the chapter’s key ideas — usually your section headings. One color per branch: it’s not just decoration, it helps your memory visually separate the main blocks.
- Branch out into detail. Each branch splits into sub-branches. Go from the general to the specific as you move away from the center.
- One keyword per branch, not a sentence. This is the most important rule, and the one most often broken. A mind map is not a course rewritten as a star. If you copy full sentences, you lose the point: the goal is to force you to condense an idea into one word that you can expand from memory.
- Link what needs linking. Add arrows between two distant branches that are connected (a cause here, a consequence there). These cross-links are often what makes the difference in an exam.
Plan on about twenty minutes per chapter. If you spend an hour on it, you’re probably coloring, not revising.
The subjects where it shines
A mind map is not universal. It works best when the subject is organized into connected themes:
- Biology, history-geography, economics: ideal for linking causes, consequences, actors and concepts.
- Philosophy: perfect for mapping authors’ positions and their oppositions.
- Summary revision at the end of a chapter, to check that you have the big picture before going into detail.
It’s also excellent for testing your memory: close your book, redraw the map from memory, and compare. The gaps you leave are exactly what you still need to review.
When a mind map is useless, or even counterproductive
Let’s be honest, because few articles say this: a mind map is a bad tool for a lot of content.
- Anything you need to learn word for word — a precise legal definition, a formula, a conjugation, vocabulary — has no “structure” to map out. For that, flashcards and spaced repetition are much more effective.
- A procedure or proof that unfolds step by step is clearer in an ordered list than in a star shape.
- Last-minute revision. Building a clean mind map takes time; three days before the exam, you often have better things to do than draw.
And there’s a subtler trap: a mind map gives you a strong feeling of mastery. The diagram looks beautiful, everything seems crystal clear in front of you… but recognizing information (“oh yes, I see it”) is not the same as retrieving it without support.
