Spaced Repetition: the method that locks a lesson into your memory
You revise a chapter thoroughly on a Sunday evening. The next day, you can recall the essentials without trouble. A week later, if someone quizzes you cold, you struggle to remember half of it. That is not a lack of seriousness: it is how memory normally works. And there is a method, backed by more than a century of research, to work around it. It is called spaced repetition, and it is probably the most effective memorization technique you can use.
Why you forget (the forgetting curve)
At the end of the 19th century, psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus measured how quickly we forget what we have just learned. His finding, now famous as the forgetting curve, is harsh: without review, you lose a large part of new information in just a few days. Your memory is not a hard drive; it constantly deletes what it considers useless.
How does it decide that information is “useful”? From a very simple signal: you needed it again. Each time you reactivate a memory, your brain marks it as important and slows down its fading. The forgetting curve rises again, and, above all, it then drops more slowly. That is the whole principle.
The idea behind spaced repetition
Since each recall strengthens and extends a memory, the trick is to review information just before you forget it — not earlier (that would waste time), not later (that would be too late). And as the memory becomes more solid, you can spread the reviews farther and farther apart.
In practice, instead of reviewing a lesson five times in the same evening (which is almost useless), you review it five times at increasing intervals: the next day, then three days later, then a week later, then two weeks later, then a month later. Each review is short, but timed correctly. That gradual spacing makes all the difference.
This mechanism relies on another powerful principle: active recall. Reviewing does not mean rereading. It means trying to retrieve the answer from memory before checking. The effort of retrieval — even when you get it wrong — is exactly what strengthens the memory. Rereading your lesson gives you the illusion of knowing; testing yourself makes you truly know. Flashcards: the natural tool for the method
To apply spaced repetition, you need a format that separates the question from the answer so you can test yourself before checking. That is exactly what a flashcard is: a question on one side, the answer on the other.
You can make them with real index cards or in a dedicated app. The advantage of digital tools is that they automatically calculate when to show you each card again: the ones you master come back rarely, the ones that still block you come back often. You no longer waste time reviewing what you already know.
A very effective manual version also exists: the Leitner method. You sort your cards into several boxes (or dividers):
- Box 1: cards you review every day.
- Box 2: every three days.
- Box 3: once a week, and so on.
A correct card moves up one box (so it appears less often); a failed card drops back to box 1. Simple, no screen, and extremely effective.
How good flashcards differ from bad ones
This is where most students go wrong. A flashcard is not a chunk of course material cut in two.
- One card = one idea. If your answer takes five lines, split it into several cards. Otherwise, you will never know exactly what is blocking you.
- Write a real question, not just a word to flip over. “What is the consequence of X?” is better than “X: …”.
- Aim for understanding, not just the exact wording. The best cards ask you to explain why, not just to repeat a definition.
- Write them yourself. Making the card is already part of learning. Using a ready-made deck created by someone else means skipping the most useful step.
A concrete plan to start tonight
- Turn your latest chapter into 10 to 20 flashcards — focused questions on the key points, not on anecdotal details.
- Do a first review today, then recall it again tomorrow.
- Then space it out: in 3 days, in a week, in two weeks. Put these sessions in your calendar if you are not using an app. This setup fits naturally into a well-built revision schedule.
- At each session, test yourself first, then check. Failed cards come back sooner.
- Be consistent. Ten minutes a day beat two hours on the weekend. Spaced repetition rewards consistency, not intensity.
