First Test of the Year: a 7-Day Revision Plan
The first test often creates a false sense of security. The syllabus seems short, so you put it off. Then, the day before, you realize that knowing the lesson is not enough to solve the exercise, write the paragraph, or choose the right method.
Seven days are enough to avoid that scenario without revising every evening for two hours. The plan below alternates understanding, recall, and practice. It works for middle school, high school, and many university courses. Just adapt the length and format of the exercises to the subject.
The principle is simple: start by measuring, work on what blocks you, then check several times without the course notes. One week guarantees no grade. But it does give you enough time to spot a gap, ask for help, and come back to an error before it appears in your paper.
Before Day -7: define what will really be assessed
Do not start by rereading the first page of the chapter. First, gather the scope: chapters, skills, announced exercises, duration, allowed materials, and mark scheme if your teacher gave it.
Write one sentence: “By the end, I should be able to…”
Examples:
- solve an equation and justify each step;
- analyze a historical document using the lesson;
- use the past simple and present perfect in a short text;
- define three economic mechanisms and illustrate them;
- build an introduction and a detailed outline.
This sentence prevents you from confusing content with the task. A student may know the definition of a derivative without being able to use it; another may recite a history lesson without answering a problem-based question.
If the scope is unclear, ask for clarification quickly. On Day -1, it will be too late to learn that the test also covers the previous chapter.
Day -7: initial self-assessment, 30 minutes
Take a blank sheet and write down everything you can remember: lesson structure, definitions, formulas, examples, and methods. Then try two or three representative exercises without looking at the solution.
Sort the results:
- green: correct answer without help;
- orange: idea known but answer incomplete or slow;
- red: concept error, method unknown, or no answer.
Be strict. “I knew it when I saw the correction” does not count as green. Recognition creates a feeling of familiarity; the test requires you to produce an answer.
This diagnosis gives you your work list. Choose a maximum of two red priorities. If everything is red, start with the prerequisite that unlocks the most exercises and plan to ask the teacher, a classmate, or a tutor for help.
Day -6: understand the two blockers, 40 minutes
Go back to the red priorities. For each one, look for:
- the rule or central idea;
- a worked example;
- the exact reason for your mistake;
- a similar exercise to redo on your own.
Then write the explanation in your own words. If you can only produce a sentence identical to the textbook, try answering “why?”, “when?”, and “in what case does this not work?”
Do not keep switching between resources. Switching from a video to a summary to a chatbot can create the feeling of working while avoiding the exercise you are struggling with. Use one clear source, then return to the problem.

Day -5: practice in the subject’s format, 45 minutes
Your practice format should match the assessed format.
In math or science, solve a short set without visible corrections and write out the steps. In language, produce sentences or a paragraph instead of rereading a list. In history, law, or economics, build an outline and use examples. For a subject based on definitions, mix direct questions with applications.
After each answer, correct in a different color and note the type of error:
- missing knowledge;
- misread instruction;
- wrong method;
- calculation or wording;
- poor time management.
The category matters as much as the correction. If you miss three exercises because you read “justify” too quickly, learning one more formula will not solve the problem.
Finish by doing one missed exercise again without looking at the solution. Reading the correction is not the same as being able to solve it yourself.
Day -4: short recall, 20 minutes
On Day -4, shorten the session. Without opening the course notes, answer five to ten questions, recite the outline, or rewrite the formulas with their meaning. Then check.
This delayed retrieval attempt is the heart of active recall. Reviews of research in cognitive psychology concludes that self-testing can improve long-term retention, especially when a reliable correction follows the attempt (Roediger and Butler, 2011). That does not mean a quiz replaces explanation: it shows what is available in memory.
Turn mistakes into small questions. A flashcard should cover only one idea. If the answer takes a page, break it up or replace it with an exercise.
Day -3: timed mini-test, 45 to 60 minutes
Create a simulation from old exercises, a provided topic, or reworked questions. Stick to a time limit, put the course notes away, and use only the allowed materials.
The goal is not to predict the topic. It is to observe four things:
- can you start without help?
- do you get stuck for a long time on one question?
- do you write enough to earn method points?
- do you leave time to review?
Correct it right away or as soon as you have a reliable answer key. For every point lost, write the matching action: learn a distinction, redo a type of exercise, practice the instruction, or speed up a step that should now be automatic.
Avoid blaming every mistake on stress. Stress is real, but “I did not know which formula to choose” is a more useful diagnosis and easier to work on.
Day -2: target, do not restart everything
Two days before the test, the temptation is to restart the chapter from the beginning. Instead, use the mini-test as your map.
Spend 30 to 45 minutes on the two easiest sources of points. Doing a common method correctly again often brings more than discovering a rare detail. Mix one successful exercise and one difficult exercise to check that you recognize the right choice without a clue.
For factual elements, use spaced repetition and flashcards. For reasoning, use a blank sheet, an outline, or a full exercise. The technique should match the skill.

Day -1: consolidate and prepare for test day, 20 minutes
The day before, do one last short recall: outline, five questions, one method, and one example. If a notion is still red, look for a targeted explanation, but do not open three new chapters.
Prepare your materials, check the time, and stop at a set hour. A late session may give you a few extra minutes of exposure while hurting attention the next day. Sleep helps consolidate learning; it does not guarantee success, but sacrificing it for a fourth reread is rarely a good trade.
Finally, note your strategy: start by reading all instructions, identify the mark scheme, handle the accessible questions, leave a trace of reasoning, and save five minutes for review. This list frees up attention on test day.

The total comes to about four hours spread over the week. Adjust it to the stakes: a short quiz does not call for a full entrance-exam preparation, while a long assignment may require two simulations.
During the test: recover points, not a perfect feeling
Read the instruction verbs: calculate, prove, compare, justify, and comment do not expect the same answer. Use the mark scheme to split your time. If you get stuck, write the data, the relevant rule, or the beginning of your reasoning, then move on. An incomplete but structured paper can earn points that a blank page gives up.
Before handing it in, check for simple omissions: unit, sign, question number, requested example, concluding sentence, front and back. Reviewing is not just for spelling; it checks that you answered what was asked.
After the grade: make the work last
When your paper comes back, do not look only at the average. Go back to the error categories from Day -5 and compare. If the same type keeps appearing, change the method. If a new mistake appears, add it to the chapter sheet.
Keep the mini-test and correction. The next assignment will often reuse a skill or prerequisite. That is how an average first test can still be useful: it gives you data on how you learn before assessments pile up.
If you tend to always start the day before, build a realistic revision schedule with short blocks. For today, do only Day -7: a blank sheet, two exercises, and two priorities. The rest of the plan will become much easier once you have identified the real problem.
